This standard covers the method for measurement of insulation thickness for testing non-metallic materials of all cable types referenced in standards for cable construction and cable materials.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_265a1\"><span id=\"2k8sp_265a1_cm92s\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_6jlo9\"><span id=\"2k8sp_6jlo9_8pu44\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">The measurements may be taken using a measuring microscope or profile projector offering at least 10x magnification or an optical digital image analyser. The two types of equipment must be capable of providing a reading accuracy of 0.01mm and an estimated reading to three decimal places when measuring<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_14l2l\"><span id=\"2k8sp_14l2l_8f8mq\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">insulation thickness with a specified thickness less than 0.5mm.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_6jtvq\"><span id=\"2k8sp_6jtvq_2qnhb\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_c6q0k\"><span id=\"2k8sp_c6q0k_es0it\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">The test sample is prepared by removing any covering over the insulation and the conductors the insulation protects. A thin slice is then taken, perpendicular to the<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_4c7k6\"><span id=\"2k8sp_4c7k6_c3mcl\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">longitudinal axis of the conductor (a circular slice) and placed flat under the measuring equipment so that the plane of the slice perpendicular to that of the<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_3ir56\"><span id=\"2k8sp_3ir56_9ag7d\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">measuring device lens.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_ffk7e\"><span id=\"2k8sp_ffk7e_882ie\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_3tl7r\"><span id=\"2k8sp_3tl7r_1u3aa\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">Six measurements are then taken, each approximately 60\u00b0 from the last. The first of these measurements is at the thinnest point of the insulation wall. The results<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_cjf3\"><span id=\"2k8sp_cjf3_aj4l3\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">are evaluated as specified in the relevant cable standard, generally against a required mean value and minimum value.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_dt68e\"><span id=\"2k8sp_dt68e_agh7e\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_b9mbc\"><span id=\"2k8sp_b9mbc_30s7q\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">Insulation thickness is an essential test and determines that there is sufficient insulation material applied whilst also serving as a measure of how concentric<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"2k8sp_ap196\"><span id=\"2k8sp_ap196_3s077\" class=\"\" data-text=\"true\">that insulation material is.
